2007 Swartz Genealogy Adventure
Yellow Springs, OH, and Madison, IN

This year's adventure began with Barbara's arrival in Columbus after spending a few days at the new Wooster Library and the Ohio Genealogical Society in Mansfield.

Wicked and the Governor
Friend Ramona joined us for dinner, after which the three women and Jim enjoyed a production of Wicked at the Ohio Theatre. After the incredible show, as we were leaving the Statehouse garage, Governor Ted Strickland walked out to his own car. We rolled down the windows to say hello, and he reached in and shook hands with Barbara, and greeted all of us. The adventure had begun!

Yellow Springs and Cousin Becky
Friday morning Barbara and I headed to Yellow Springs, Ohio where we were to meet up with Swartz cousin Becky. We detoured through Springfield to take a look at the Westcott house (Frank Lloyd Wright), and to drive around Antioch College in YS. After coffee and pie at the Sunrise Cafe, we entered Ye Olde Trail Tavern across the street.

Our third cousin Becky, a descendant from Ellen Swartz, arrived soon afterwards. We spent the next hour and a half showing photos, sharing stories, and updating data for the genealogy records. The visit ended too soon, but Barbara and I had to move along in order to arrive in Madison, Indiana before dinnertime.

Seems we have found a new branch of Swartzes. Susan emailed me saying that her brother had found this blog.

2005 Swartz Genealogy Adventure
Granville, Ohio

Barbara and Megan explored Granville, Ohio, visiting the graves of John Miller Swartz, Hiram B. Swartz, and their families. We had lovely rooms at the Buxton Inn with our own sitting room and balcony porch. The weekend included a trip to the Heisey Glass Museum in Newark, and a theatre production of Steele Magnolias at the Weathervane Playhouse.

2004 Swartz Genealogy Adventure
Wooster, Ohio

Just returned from a weekend of genealogical adventure in Wooster, Ohio. Cousin Barbara and I stayed at a beautiful Victorian B&B right next to the home where our ancestor Hiram B. Swartz and family lived from 1877 to 1939.

Highlights of the trip:

  • Going up and inside the clocktower of the Wayne County Courthouse.

  • Poking into rain-soaked grounds looking for fallen gravestones.

  • The Squirrel Orchestra.

  • Touring Hiram B. Swartz's home.

  • Leaving a message on a gravestone.

Thanks, Cousin Barbara! Let's get some more Swartz descendants to join us next year in Granville -- we'll visit Denison University, and dig up some more relatives there!

We have a new Swartz cousin!

Shelley is the granddaughter of Blooma Zeigler Miller, who was the granddaughter of Adeline Swartz and Henry Zeigler. Adeline was Samuel's oldest daughter. Shelley says that Blooma is really a "step" grandmother, as she married Alva Miller when he was widowed with 3 small children. Blooma left a handwritten life story for Shelley that has Swartz info in it.

Thanks for sharing, Shelley! Step, or not, you're family!

Swartz Mysteries

1. Sarah Ann Carnahan (born 1848, died 1879), wife of John Miller Swartz. Adopted in England by the Carnahans. Birth parents' name was Teagle. Carnahans are not listed in Wayne Co. for 1850 census -- Were they in England adopting their baby? Why did they go to England for the adoption? Did they know the Teagles?

2. Robert R. Carnahan, Sarah Ann's adopted father (died 8 May 1888). Does anyone know where he's buried? His wife Elizabeth Ann Cotton (died 1882) is buried in Seville, OH, with a large and lovely monument. There is no inscription, monument, or burial record for Robert. So far, I've not been able to find an obituary on him either.
